How does a bail bond work?

Bail Bondsmen

When an accused is arrested, he or she can choose to get a bail bond through a bondsman or a bail bond agency. In order to get the accused out of jail, a bail bond covers the bail amount needed. The defendant can get out of jail by paying 10% of the full bail amount to the bail bond agent. The bondsman pays the full bail amount to the court, and gets the entire amount back if the defendant appears for all court dates. The risk of the defendant not showing up for the court dates is taken into account in the 10% fee the bondsman charges. If the accused appears for all court dates, the bondsman receives back the full bail amount. The 10% of the full bail amount is a fee charged by the bail company for their services and is non-refundable.
